HiLux Record Sales as November’s Top Selling Cars Revealed

The latest sales results have been released detailing the top selling cars by brand and model for November. While the figures record new car sales, it is a classic, long-time Aussie favourite, the Toyota HiLux, which is attracting the main attention for record-smashing results. The sales result for November for the HiLux places the much-loved ute in the esteemed company.

The sales figures for the HiLux for 2022 so far (year-to-date) are the largest recorded in the country for a new vehicle for nearly 2 decades and are ahead of the model’s 2021 results. According to reports, these sales numbers have not been seen since the early part of the 2000s when the Falcon and Commodore dominated the new car market.

The November result also saw HiLux once again take top spot over the Ford Ranger. Other notable moves in the November top selling cars results are a continued rise in EVs and hybrids and two popular Chinese badges – GWM Haval and MG recorded higher figures than South Korean brands for another month in 2022.

For those in the market for a new car, and we note that the monthly VFacts as reported by the FCAI are only for new car sales, we catch you up on the November results. FCAI Reports November Car Sales

The FCAI reported the November 2022 new vehicle sales figures this past week, noting an increase of nearly 18% on the total figures for November 2021. Once again, the passenger car segment continues to fall while the SUV market continues to rise significantly. For November 2022, SUV sales were up just under 32%.

Mr Tony Weber, the Chief Executive of the FCAI said that the auto sector was continuing its recovery from the computer chip shortage, pandemic shutdowns and the uncertainties around the supply chain. He said the 1,000,000th vehicle to be sold in Australia in 2022 would occur in early December.

Mr Weber noted the positive nature of the latest news but that there were still customers facing extended delays in receiving their new vehicles. Some extend more than 12-month waiting times.  In a sign of the changed environment post-pandemic, the FCAI notes the increase in sales to rental car companies ahead of what is expected to be a huge holiday season following several years of border restrictions.

The sales of EVs – battery, plug-in hybrids and hybrids, continued its upward trend. Mr Weber noted the proposed Federal Law changes regarding tariffs on EVs etc. and the importance of purchase incentives and other aspects in driving down Australia’s carbon emissions from light vehicles.

Top Brands, Top Models

Now into the detail of what buyers are really after – the top selling cars by brand and model. As we mention each month when reporting this data, keep in mind Mr Weber’s comment re delivery times. There are still wait times for some makes and models and as was seen in a previous month with the Ranger, a major shipment arrival in a month can affect figures for that month.

In the brand stakes, Toyota maintained its dominance at the top followed by Mazda and then Ford in third place. Kia and Mitsubishi rounded out the top five. Then came Hyundai, MG, Subaru, VW and GWM Haval.

In the top-selling vehicles across all categories, it was the HiLux out in front, ahead by just under 400 units from the Ranger, with another Toyota, the popular Corolla joining them on the podium. Fourth place was taken by the MG ZS, then Toyota’s RAV4, Mazda CX5 and Mitsubishi Outlander. The final models in the top 10 were the Sportage from Kia, the Tesla Model Y and the Tucson from Hyundai.

With SUVs continuing top of the popularity stakes and for those still hoping to purchase a new SUV for a summer holiday road trip, we give you the top 3 sellers in some of the popular SUV categories.
