Car sales surprise – Kia takes to the podium ahead of Mazda

Kia has taken third place in monthly new car sales figures for August, behind Toyota and Ford, and overtaking Mazda for this first time since 2022. The impressive result coincides with the release of the Tasman, the brand’s first dual cab pick-up ute, as well as several new hybrid and electric vehicles.

With Kia now on the new car sales podium, the top ten selling brands for the month are - Toyota out in front, then Ford and Kia, Mazda now in fourth spot, Hyundai, BYD, Mitsubishi, GWM, MG and Chery. Sales on a year-to-date basis still has Toyota out in front but followed by Mazda, Ford and then Kia.

In announcing the data for August car sales, Tony Weber, Chief Executive of the FCAI noted that it was the first time that the top ten brands list included four brands from China. Commenting, that this showed how the landscape in Australia’s car sales continues to evolve and how buyers are adapting to the many new options available to them.

Buyers of new cars in Australia have over 400 models to select from, including approximately 100 electric vehicles. Making that buying decision a challenge. Referring to the monthly sales figures of new cars may provide some inspiration and direction.

Buyer Inspiration – August New Car Sales

Plenty of buyers were in the new vehicle market in August, with the monthly sales making it the second biggest August for sales on record. The SUV segment continues to be the most popular with 60% of sales and the passenger car segment again falling. Plug-in hybrids have 3.9% of the new car market and EVs 6.8%.

Interestingly, while Kia recorded strong overall sales to lift it into third place in the brand sales, no individual models made it into the top 10 best-selling models for the month. Although their Sportage SUV did outsell the very popular Mazda CX-5 in August. The Sportage has recently been updated and could be worth a look for those in the market for a mid-sized SUV for their Christmas, road trip holiday.

The 10 best-selling models for August were headed up by, as usual, by the Ford Ranger just ahead of the Toyota HiLux. Toyota’s RAV4 was third, ahead of the MG ZS and then the Tesla Model Y. Number 5 was the Isuzu D-Max, then Ford’s Everest, Toyota Prado, Hyundai Kona, and finally the Toyota Corolla.

Kia Models to Consider

With Kia on the third step of the monthly sales podium, buyers should probably have closer look at their model range and find out for themselves why so many other drivers have decided on this brand. The range is extremely inclusive with options for many buyers, especially with the new Tasman ute. The top models are the Sportage, Carnival, Seltos, Tasman and the Picanto, one of only a few small car models still in the market. The electric models are the EV5, EV3 and EV9 SUVs and the cross-over SUV models - EV6 and Niro EV. The hybrids are the Sportage, Sorento, Carnival and Niro HEV.

Cab chassis buyers can consider Kia’s first – the Tasman. This one-tonne ute is available in 5 grades with 4x2 and 4x4 off-road capabilities. The engine is 2.2 litre turbo diesel, and the ute features an 8-speed auto transmission. The payload is 1,000kg and quoted braked towing capacity 3,500 kgs. Tasman has a GCM rating of 6,200 kgs and GVM of 3,250 kgs and a massive tub capacity.
