With very little surprise for those that follow the motor vehicle market, Toyota has once again come in as the leading brand in June’s top selling cars figures. The results for new car sales were released by the FCAI recently and with several models in the top 25, Toyota continued its reign as Australia’s top seller brand.
The new car market is going through a difficult period due to the ongoing pandemic-related supply chain issues and the semi-conductor shortage. Both of which have caused production shutdowns in for most manufacturers and long delays for Australian buyers to get the keys to the car of their choice.
While it can be of interest to buyers and enthusiasts to follow the monthly car sales reports, the current situation in regard to delivery delays has overshadowed the relevance of the data in regard actual popularity. The figures represent cars delivered for the month not the number of orders awaiting delivery. Used car sales are not reported through the FCAI VFACTS system.

Supply Constraints Continue to Impact New Car Sales
Before getting into the specific data, we report on the statement released by Tony Weber from the FCAI in conjunction with the latest VFACTS figures. The sales in total for June 2022 9.7% down on the same period in 2021. As he has in previous monthly announcements, Mr Weber reiterated the issues which continue as impediments to supply of new vehicles in Australia.
The issues are of course the ongoing COVID situation overseas, Ukraine situation and the shipping problems. Mr Weber said car makers were still dealing with plant shutdowns and that microprocessor supply still posed issues. According to the FCAI, demand for new cars remains strong however, the issues around supply look like continuing for a while yet.
The FCAI revealed Toyota as the top selling brand overall for June 2022. Kia then Hyundai followed with Mazda and then Mitsubishi making up the top 5. The passenger car segment was down 21% compared with June 2021 and the SUV segment also dropped by 2.3%.
Specific Model Sales Results
Knowing what specific models are selling best may provide buyers with some indication of possible availability. Information which may assist the buying process. But be aware that these sales may be deliveries for long-standing orders and dealers may not have much if any additional stock. But it can be worth checking out the data and following-up with your local dealer. Tip: many dealers have a portal on their website which shows current stock. It’s a handy resource to save making lots of phone calls.
Top selling models for June were: HiLux, Tucson, Ranger, Corolla, RAV4, D-MAX, Sportage, Triton, i30 and MG HS. MG models have sold well in recent months and HS sales are up 79% for June 2022 compared with June 2021. This could be a sign of availability for those considering a reasonably inexpensive model.
Lower down the sales figures comes the Outlander, Toyota’s Kluger, Cerato, Prado, one of the LandCruiser models, MG ZS, GWM’s ute, 79 Series LandCruiser, and Subaru’s Outback. Ford’s Everest and the Kona from Hyundai. Another MG, the 3 and three Mazda’s – BT 50, CX-3 and CX-5 round out the month’s best sellers.
An added note to our availability-sales figures comment – we do know from enquiries that back in March Mazda was taking deposits and orders for CX-3 models for June-July delivery.
The monthly vehicle sales figures are broken down per category. Too many for us to report here. But those interested can see the details as Drive has posted the full listing with top three in each category.
