Check out February’s Top Selling Cars for Buying Inspo

Out of general interest or seeking serious buying inspiration, checking out what cars are selling best is a popular and can be extremely useful for buyers. Both keen buyers and motoring enthusiasts can look to the latest top selling cars figures for inspiration on what is selling or to keep abreast of popular makes and models.

The latest sales figures have been issued by the FCAI for February 2022 and the jury seems out that the popularity of the traditional passenger car has definitely given way to SUVs and utes.

As we have mentioned in several posts over the past few ‘COVID-impacted’ years, assessing best-selling figures must be done in the context of the current market conditions. That means availability. Many brands have been impacted by the microprocessor shortage and shipping issues. Manufacturers have faced difficulties getting models into showrooms and buyers behind the wheel.

As these challenges are overcome by individual brands, more vehicles are available to fill back orders for much-relieved dealers. For prospective new car buyers we provide details on the latest top selling cars and finance options to secure the vehicle of choice.

FCAI Statement

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries is the peak organisation which represents many in the Australian automotive sector. The FCAI releases the figures for sales of new vehicles each month and issues a statement highlighting the key points.

Sales for February 2022 were up 1.6% on the same month in 2021 and Mr Tony Weber, the Chief Executive of the FCAI said that was positive news given that the supply chains had not as yet been completely stabilised.

Mr Weber said that complete recovery of the global supply chain in regard to the shortage of microprocessors remained some way off. He said that the demand for new cars from Australian consumers remained strong and that the manufacturers were working hard to get motorists behind their wheels.

Sales in General

The sales figures are broken down by state/territory and by top makes and models and compared to the corresponding month in the previous year and some figures are reported as YOY (year on year). On a state basis and in comparison with 2021, ACT down 2.6%; NSW down 3.5%; QLD up 3.8%; TAS up 16.6%; SA up 8.9%; VIC up 5.5% and WA down 1.7%.

The passenger car market is down 18.3% compared with February 2021 while the SUV sector is up 5.4%. The light commercial sector, vans, continues to post strong sales with another increase in February 2022 compared with 2021.

As a sign of the trend away from passenger cars and towards SUVs, there is only one passenger model in the top ten sales results for apparently the first time. This trend is also reflected in the number of passenger car models, especially in the smaller sizes, currently on the market. So if you’re in the market for a passenger car you may need to rethink and consider a SUV.
